{"id":916,"date":"2010-04-02T11:05:24","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T15:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2d823b65bb.nxcli.io\/?p=916"},"modified":"2010-04-02T11:05:24","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T15:05:24","slug":"fifth-anniversary-of-odf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robweir.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/fifth-anniversary-of-odf.html","title":{"rendered":"Fifth Anniversary of ODF is May 1st"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ll be hitting a significant date next month.\u00a0 It was on May 1st, 2005 that Open Document Format (ODF) 1.0 was <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.oasis-open.org\/archives\/tc-announce\/200505\/msg00001.html\">approved by OASIS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I hope we can all take time to reflect on far we&#8217;ve gone, with the specification itself,\u00a0 with the quality and diversity of implementations and with world-wide adoption.<\/p>\n<p>As we read that the other &#8220;standard&#8221;, after only 2 years,\u00a0 appear to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adjb.net\/post\/Microsoft-Fails-the-Standards-Test.aspx\">circling the drain<\/a>, I hope we take a few moments on May 1st to ask ourselves why ODF did not suffer a similar fate.\u00a0 What worked well with ODF?\u00a0 And what can we teach the world about open standards?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, not everything in ODF is perfect, but to be still so relevant after 5 years is an accomplishment worth bragging about.\u00a0 Not every standard makes it this far.\u00a0 We should celebrate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ll be hitting a significant date next month.\u00a0 It was on May 1st, 2005 that Open Document Format (ODF) 1.0 was approved by OASIS.
