The British were calling it &#8220;Georgium Sidus&#8221; (George&#8217;s Star), after King George III. (Flattery will get you everywhere.\u00a0 When Gallileo discovered the moons of Jupiter in 1610, he called them &#8220;Cosmica Sidera&#8221; (Cosimo&#8217;s Stars) after his patron, the Grand Duke de&#8217;Medici.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans, of course, were not huge fans of King George III.\u00a0 So they named the planet after its discoverer, William Herschel.<\/p>\n<p>Still others called for it to be called &#8220;Neptune.&#8221; But, in the end (again, no pun intended) the scientific community adopted the name &#8220;Uranus,&#8221; much to the distress of every 7th grade science teacher.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/2d823b65bb.nxcli.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/uranus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2674\" src=\"https:\/\/2d823b65bb.nxcli.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/uranus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.robweir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/uranus.jpg 511w, https:\/\/www.robweir.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/uranus-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>See below, a page from a high school textbook in use in New England in 1849, Elijah Burritt&#8217;s The Geography of the Heavens.\u00a0 Ever hear of this planet?
