{"id":202,"date":"2009-02-09T23:37:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-10T04:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2d823b65bb.nxcli.io\/2009\/02\/the-joy-of-mathematics.html"},"modified":"2009-12-27T20:55:08","modified_gmt":"2009-12-28T01:55:08","slug":"joy-of-mathematics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robweir.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/joy-of-mathematics.html","title":{"rendered":"The Joy of Mathematics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Wall Street Journal recently had an article on the <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB123119236117055127.html\">best and worst jobs<\/a> in the U.S., based on a mix of criteria including pay, stress level, work environment and employment outlook.<\/p>\n<p>Any guesses for the best jobs?<\/p>\n<p>The top 5 are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mathematician<\/li>\n<li>Actuary<\/li>\n<li>Statistician<\/li>\n<li>Biologist<\/li>\n<li>Software Engineer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The top three places reminds me of a line in an old episode of The Simpson&#8217;s where a space shuttle crew is described as consisting of &#8220;a statistician,  a mathematician, and  another kind of statistician.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, &#8220;Philosopher&#8221; came in very high on the list.   I would have expected it to have a low stress level, no demands from the boss, &#8220;I need some epistemology ASAP and a first draft of aesthetics on my desk by the end of the week, or else the Miller account will take their business to the non-Western philosophy firm!&#8221; But I didn&#8217;t know the pay was good.<\/p>\n<p>The worst jobs, of the 200 surveyed?  Lumberjack, followed by Dairy farmer and Taxi Driver.
