King Egbert (?)

M, b. circa 775, d. 4 February 839
King Egbert (?) married Redburga (?).1 King Egbert (?) was born circa 775. He died on 4 February 839. He was buried at Wincester, England.1 He Egbert was from the Wessex royal family of Cerdic, who was considered dangerous enough to Beorhtric, a puppet king for the Mercian ruler, that he was exiled. As a result, as an adolescent Egbert spent more than three years at the court of Charlemagne. A military leader of great skill, Egbert's first important victory was over the Mercians in 825. At the battle of Ellendun Egbert's forces completely defeated the Mercian troops, with the result, according to the Anglo-Saxon chronicle, that 'there was a great slaughter there.' He sent his son Ethelwulf against the sub-king of Kent, with the result that the kingdom of Wessex took in Kent, Sussex, Essex and Surrey. Four years later, Egbert led his army through Mercia, completely defeating the Mercian ruler. As a result, Egbert ruled a kingdom that united all Britain south of the Humber. During the last eight years of Egbert's life, he concentrated on the Welsh. Defeating West Wales, he became overlord of Cornwall and Devon. Egbert is considered as the eighth, or by some accounts the tenth, 'Bretwalda' (overlord or ruler of Britain). http://www.royalist.info/execute/biog?person=176.
