     William Lightbody was "crofter" (one who rents and tills a small farm or helding).1 He was born on 15 May 1808 at Carnwath, Lanark, Scotland.2 He was the son of Thomas Lightbody and Agnes Yates. William Lightbody married Agnes Witherspoon, daughter of Archibald Witherspoon and Margaret Hamilton, on 28 September 1834 at Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland; Marriage record on order.3 Marriage banns for William Lightbody and Agnes Witherspoon were published on 12 October 1834 at Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland; "Proclaimed William Lightbody in this Parish, and Agnes Witherspoon in the Parish of Dalserf for two days on the 12th and 19th October 1834."4 William Lightbody and Agnes Witherspoon appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Jollyfield, Carluke, Lanark, Scotland. William Lightbody witnessed the death of Margaret Hamilton on 20 March 1855 at Kilncadzow, Carluke, Lanark, Scotland; cause of death listed as, "old age, no medical attendant."5 William Lightbody and Agnes Witherspoon appeared on the census of 1861 at Carluke, Lanark, Scotland. William Lightbody married Marion Martin between 1874 and 1875; Date of marriage to Marion Martin is bracketed by birth of Marion Martin Lightbody (1874) to Elizabeth Lightbody, obviously named after her step-mother, the joint Will of William and Marion dated 1875.6 William Lightbody left a will on 18 January 1875. He was Laborer on 17 June 1878.7 He appeared on the census of 1881 at Carluke, Lanark, Scotland.2 He died on 7 July 1898 at Braidwood, Carluke, Lanark, Scotland, at age 90; "Debility syncope."8
